Transplants for Sale

Benefits of buying organic transplants from your local farmer:

Bedding plants, AKA nursery transplants, are shipped across the country to nurseries and big box stores in less than desirable conditions (crammed into a dark semi-truck trailer). Once in the stores, they are treated with chemicals to keep them looking like healthy plants.  These are standard varieties that are bred to withstand lack of moisture and the long days of transportation. They aren’t bred for flavor or productivity.

There a 1000’s of seeds made from companies owned by GMO-giant Monsanto. They are sold under the names like Burpee, Jung, or Ferry Morse. Our transplants are grown from USDA certified organic seed. No GMO’s. No funny “Frankenstein” plants. It’s almost impossible to find organic transplants at stores or nurseries.

Standard transplants that you buy at places like Lowes or regular plant nurseries are sprayed with chemical fungicides and are pumped full of synthetic fertilizers to make the plants look super healthy and productive. It’s an illusion. The plants aren’t really that healthy and are now covered in chemicals. Sometimes, in lieu of seeds, they use harmful root stimulators to reproduce existing plants. Those chemical so dangerous you have to use gloves and you can’t breathe in the powder.

So…  now you know why you probably don’t want to buy nursery or big-box store transplants.

But there’s even more reason to buy them from your local farmer:

We know what plants work well in our climate
We know what plants are good producers
We know what plants produce great tasting vegetables
We know which plants are good at resisting pests

(We know all of this because these are the exact same plants we grow at the farm.)

We use natural, USDA certified organic fertilizers in our homemade potting soil mix
We plant our seeds in soil blocks*. This offers very little root disruption which means the plants don’t suffer as much “transplant shock” when you plant them in the garden. Your transplants travel less than 30 miles from our farm to your garden

*What is a soil block?
A soil block is a block of growing medium that has been lightly compressed and shaped by a form. A soil block serves as both a container and the soil for starting and growing seedlings, eliminating the need for plastic pots and trays for transplanted seedlings. Seedlings grown in soil blocks form stronger root systems than those grown in containers due to increased oxygen to the roots and the soil block’s natural tendency to “prune” roots. This creates a substantial advantage when seedlings are transplanted into the field, because plants establish themselves more quickly and, because of lessened root disruption, they are less prone to transplant shock.
